With the Government of Nepal as a major shareholder, VUCL is committed to developing Nepal’s vast and largely untapped hydropower potential in an economically viable, environmentally responsible, and sustainable manner.
Nepal is endowed with abundant water resources and possesses significant hydropower potential, providing a strong foundation for sustainable economic growth and energy security. Recognizing the strategic importance of hydropower in meeting the country’s increasing electricity demand, reducing dependence on imported energy, promoting industrial development, and expanding opportunities for regional electricity trade, the Government of Nepal has prioritized the development of large-scale hydropower projects.
With this objective, the Government of Nepal took the initiative to establish a dedicated public company to develop and implement hydropower projects through appropriate investment and financing models, including partnerships with domestic and international investors. The Company aims to facilitate the development, construction, ownership, and operation of large-scale hydropower projects through commercially sound and sustainable approaches, including public-private partnership models where appropriate.
As a result of this initiative, Vidhyut Utpadan Company Limited (VUCL) was established and registered with the Office of the Company Registrar, Government of Nepal, under the prevailing Companies Act. The Company has been entrusted with the responsibility of identifying, developing, and implementing strategically important hydropower projects that can make a significant contribution to Nepal’s electricity generation capacity and long-term economic transformation.
VUCL aspires to become a leading hydropower development institution in Nepal by mobilizing investment, adopting modern technology and international best practices, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring responsible environmental and social management. Through the development of sustainable and commercially viable hydropower projects, VUCL seeks to transform Nepal’s natural water resources into reliable and clean energy, thereby supporting economic growth, creating employment opportunities, improving the living standards of citizens, and contributing to Nepal’s emergence as a significant player in the regional energy market.
Ultimately, VUCL is committed to contributing to a secure, sustainable, and prosperous energy future for Nepal by converting the country’s immense hydropower potential into productive national assets for the benefit of present and future generations.
